Spoken Skills

To neutralist such situations, or to turn them around to your advantage you may have to:
1)vary your volume and tone according to the distance
between you and your listeners. When speaking to a
large gathering, aim for the people in the last row to
hear you clearly;
2) manipulate the environment as much as possible by
allowing the audience to first settle down before you
speak to them. After your audience has settled down,
shut the doors. Then, depending on the nature of your
talk, it is not impolite to ask your listeners to switch
off all cellular phones;
3 ) You never have to raise your voice at the dinner table,
but you may need to vary your volume to meet other
situations.
PITCH
Skill in the use of
variety in pitch is the
mark of an excellent
speaker. A speaker who
has a vivid imagination
and who injects passion,

meaning and feeling
uses a wide pitch range.
The range goes from a
low pitch used to"
express serious emotion
to a high pitch used to
express excitement.

Pitch is the height or the depth of a tone on the musical scale. Your voice is constantlyshifting from one pitch to another in response to your mood and thought. Pitch depends on how fast the vocal chords vibrate. Fast vibration produces a high tone, and slow vibration produces a deep tone. Women's voices are usually high-pitched when compared to men's voices, and as one grows older, the pitch gradually becomes lower. The high pitch and the low pitch have theirown characteristics. Most people find that the low-pitched
voice is more pleasant to listen to. If your voice is naturally
high-pitched, you cannot lower it. Still, there are people
with perfectly normal voices who talk with a high pitch, or
a low pitch. If it's high pitch, either it's because of stress,
nervous tension, or by talking above street noises, blaring
music and television serials.
Incorrect use of low pitch is a fad
today among the teens, who try using
the low pitch to imitate screen and
television stars.

If your pitch is not low naturally do not try to adopt a
low pitch as your normal key.
D: as in does
This is a voiced stop. The tongue is on the tooth ridge during
the formation of this sound. The only difference between t
and d is that one is voiceless and the other is voiced. The tip
of the tongue must be behind the teeth and not touching
them. Make a special effort to sound the d every time you
see it at the end of the word.

Daring ducks dived downward.
This old doctor wouldn't do what other common doctors do.
Dig deep, dear. If we don't find the food we're doomed.
A drum, a drum; Macbeth doth come.
Hey, diddle, diddle;
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed to see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Contrast the t and d sounds in the follsng worods.
